What we do

AYB exists for the education of Australian youth to achieve the highest standard as a concert performance and marching display band.

We promote, develop music and musical excellence in our band.

Patrons

Les Youie OAM. Patron and long-time friend of AYB.

AYB was formed as the Moomba Youth Band to perform as a 'one-off' at the 1979 Melbourne Moomba Festival’s Silver Jubilee. The band was such a success that Les Youie, and other parents, campaigned to keep it running for future Moomba Festivals and other public events. A committee was formed with Les as President and the band performed under the Moomba Festival banner into the 1980s.

When the Moomba Board could no longer support the band, Les led a movement to establish a parents’ association as a legal entity to be known as the Melbourne Moomba Youth Band Association Inc. He drew up the constitution and the association was incorporated on 7 August 1987. It is now known as the Australian Youth Band Association Incorporated and large portions of that original constitution continue to serve us well to this day!

Over the years, Les held the positions of President 1979-1985, Treasurer 1992-1993, and Public Officer 1988-1996. He was the first recipient of the Association’s prestigious Life Membership award in 1989. Since 1978, many hundreds of young people have had opportunities to play, develop and travel as performing musicians in a supportive and nurturing environment with MMYB/AYB and this is in no small part due to the efforts of Les Youie.

In 2007, Les Youie was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his years of service to community groups in addition to our own, including the Young Chinese League.

Les was made a Patron of AYB in March 2014 in recognition of his outstanding dedication, service, advice and continued enthusiastic support over a long period. Also in 2014, the Les Youie Long Service Award was established in recognition of 10 years of service by band members.

John Morrison. Patron since 2001.

John Morrison is a gifted jazz drummer, band leader, record producer and music educator who, together with his many groups has headlined every major event and festival in Australia. He has been a Patron of AYB since 2001.

John and his wife, singer Jacki Cooper, regularly visit disadvantaged communities in the Northern Territory, inspiring hundreds of children to get involved in the joys of music, and giving young indigenous Australians the opportunity to try jazz.

John has appeared with AYB on a number of occasions, including five of our annual concerts and in March 2014 playing to Sydney audiences at Darling Harbour.

Rhonda Burchmore. Patron since 2011.

Rhonda was appointed as AYB’s second Patron at our 2011 Annual Concert where she also performed a fabulous rendition of “Sway” with the band.

From television to the big screen, musical theatre to opera, cabaret to the stage, Rhonda Burchmore has forged a very successful career in show business in Australia and internationally. Among her many achievements, Rhonda was nominated for a 2002 Mo Award for Female Musical Theatre Performer of The Year and Female Vocal Variety Performer of The Year. In 2012 Rhonda was awarded Female Entertainer of the Year and in 2014, Rhonda received a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the arts and community.

Our History

Our band was formed in 1978, when Melbourne City Councillors decided that a worthy contribution to 1979’s 25th Anniversary of the Moomba Festival would be the formation of a youth marching band to lead the Procession.

Known as the Moomba Band, and with funding from the City Council and the Moomba Board, the Band was formed with some 70 talented young musicians aged between 13 and 18 from all over Victoria, their uniform featuring the red, white and silver colours of the Melbourne City Council.

Such was the success of the band’s performances at Moomba, a number of enthusiastic parents of band members formed a committee and convinced the Council and the Moomba Board to maintain the Band with their voluntary help. To ensure the band would continue into the future, a parents’ association was formed, a Constitution drawn up and the Melbourne Moomba Youth Band Association registered as an incorporated body on the 7th of August 1987.

Known as the Australian Youth Band Association Incorporated since 2001, the Association remains as the legal entity that administers the Australian Youth Band. The Association consists of current and past Committee and Band members, parents of current and past Band members, and anyone else who wants to support the Band. All members of the Association and Committee are volunteers.
